Belonging as Prevention: iCan Dream Center’s Response to Gun Violence Awareness Month
Every June, Gun Violence Awareness Month serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost and the communities shattered by senseless acts of violence. But it’s also a call to action—a collective opportunity to imagine and create a safer world. At iCan Dream Center, we respond to that call by addressing one of the most overlooked and powerful tools in preventing violence: belonging.
Our students come to us carrying stories—some marked by adversity, instability, and trauma. But when they walk through our doors, they are met with a culture that sees them, values them, and wraps them in unwavering support. We know that when a young person feels seen and connected, when they are part of a community that believes in them, the trajectory of their life begins to shift.
Belonging isn’t soft. It’s powerful. Research shows that young people who feel socially connected and emotionally supported are less likely to engage in or become victims of violence. That’s why our classrooms are built not just on curriculum, but on trust. That’s why our staff receive training in trauma-informed care. That’s why we partner with families and communities to extend our reach beyond school walls.
This month, as the nation honors victims and calls for change, we renew our own commitment—not just to academic achievement, but to cultivating an environment where every student feels safe, supported, and essential. Because we believe the antidote to violence is not just policy or programming—it’s people. And at iCan Dream Center, people come first.
Let June be a reminder that the work of peace begins with the work of connection. And that when young people feel like they truly belong, they don’t just dream bigger—they live safer.
