What Makes a Great Worksite Partner?
“What are we working on today?”
That is often the energy one of our iCan Dream Center scholars brings when he arrives at the Tinley Park Public Library. He is focused, motivated, and ready to get to work. More importantly, he looks forward to being there.
And the feeling is mutual.
The staff at the Tinley Park Public Library have come to know his work ethic, his enthusiasm, and the pride he takes in completing his responsibilities. They enjoy having him as part of their team, and he enjoys knowing that his contribution matters.
This is what a great worksite partnership looks like.
At the iCan Dream Center, we intentionally connect neurodivergent youth and young adults with work environments where their strengths can be recognized, developed, and put into practice. Our team helps prepare scholars for the workplace, supports employers throughout the experience, and works alongside both the scholar and the worksite to help the placement succeed.
Meaningful Work Creates Growth
At the Tinley Park Public Library, our scholar is given meaningful responsibilities and clear expectations.
He enjoys staying productive, completing assigned tasks, and knowing that his work has a purpose. Over time, he has become more comfortable with workplace routines and more confident completing responsibilities with greater independence.
That growth matters.
A successful internship should not simply keep a young person busy. It should give them opportunities to practice responsibility, communication, organization, task completion, and independence in a real workplace.
When scholars know their work matters, they begin to see themselves differently.
They begin to see themselves as employees.
Support Makes the Difference
Great worksite partners understand that learning workplace skills takes time.
The Tinley Park Public Library staff provide clear direction, encouragement, and support while still giving our scholar room to grow. They recognize his strengths, help him work through new responsibilities, and celebrate the progress he makes.
The iCan Dream Center remains involved throughout the experience as well. We provide coaching, communicate with worksite staff, address concerns, and help identify opportunities for scholars to take the next step toward greater independence.
That shared support creates a stronger experience for everyone.
A Place Where He Belongs
One of the most powerful parts of this partnership is simple.
He looks forward to going to work.
They look forward to having him there.
For many of our scholars, a work-based learning experience may be the first time they feel what it is like to be part of a professional team, to have people depend on them, and to know that their contribution is valued.
The Tinley Park Public Library did more than provide an internship site. They created a place where a young person can show up ready to work, continue building his skills, and feel that he belongs.
At the same time, he brings focus, enthusiasm, consistency, and a genuine desire to get the job done.
That is a true partnership.
Who Will Open the Next Door?
We are grateful to the Tinley Park Public Library for showing what is possible when a worksite recognizes the strengths a young person brings to the table.
Somewhere within the iCan Dream Center is another scholar who is ready to work, contribute, learn, and become part of a team.
What they need is an organization willing to open the door.
If your business or organization is interested in becoming an iCan Dream Center worksite partner, please contact Dr. Michae’ Wiley, Director of Career Pathways and Partnerships, at [email protected].
When the right scholar and the right worksite come together, everyone benefits.
