Celebrating Growth Through the Illinois Youth Investment Program
Through the Illinois Youth Investment Program (IYIP), our students at iCan Dream Center had the opportunity to participate in a powerful, grant-funded workforce development experience made possible through our partnership with Metropolitan Family Services. Being selected as an MFS partner allowed our students to step into real-world learning that builds confidence, responsibility, and career readiness.
One morning during training, a student quietly raised her hand and asked a question she had been holding onto for days. She wasn’t sure if she was “doing it right” or if she truly belonged in the room. With encouragement from the MFS directors, program facilitators, and her peers, she stayed engaged, asked more questions, and kept showing up — even on days when the material felt overwhelming. By the end of the program, that same student walked into the room with confidence, purpose, and pride.
While this achievement may not come with a traditional degree, it represents something just as meaningful: perseverance, growth, and follow-through.
Through the Illinois Youth Investment Program, our students were trusted with responsibility, introduced to workplace expectations, and supported in developing essential soft skills that prepare them for future employment and independence.
In addition to receiving a stipend for their participation, students gained hands-on experience, professional exposure, and the confidence that comes from being valued contributors. That confidence was visible as students proudly held their Certificates of Completion — tangible reminders that their effort, consistency, and commitment matter.
This partnership reflects the true purpose of the Illinois Youth Investment Program: creating pathways that support young people as they transition into adulthood with skills, dignity, and opportunity. We are deeply grateful to Metropolitan Family Services for believing in our students and investing in inclusive workforce development that meets young people where they are and lifts them toward what’s possible. It takes a whole community to invest in the success of youth. When the community answers that call, particularly for students who are systemically boxed out, we celebrate!
