A Gen Z Perspective on Autism
By: Maeve age 16
Honestly, being autistic feels like navigating life with a unique playlist running in your head—sometimes people vibe with your music, sometimes they don’t quite understand your rhythm. For Gen Z, autism isn’t something we’re hiding; it’s part of our authenticity, part of our brand. It’s challenging at times, sure—crowded spaces can feel loud, and social cues can feel like decoding TikTok trends nobody explained. But it also means hyper focusing like binge-watching a Netflix show in one night, being passionately committed to causes like climate change or mental health and bringing fresh perspectives that shake things up. My generation isn’t asking to “fit in,” we’re asking everyone else to expand their definition of normal. Autism isn’t our limit—it’s our lens, and through it, we’re reshaping what success and community look like.
This is all so important because recognizing autism—and really embracing it—means creating a world where everyone gets to show up as themselves. Gen Z thrives on individuality and inclusivity, and when we genuinely accept autism, we unlock fresh ideas, empathy, and perspectives that challenge the status quo. Honestly, the biggest solutions to today’s problems—whether it’s social justice, sustainability, or mental health—are going to come from diverse voices, especially those who see the world differently. When society truly values autistic voices, we break down stereotypes, erase stigma, and empower everyone to own their narrative. It’s not just about awareness; it’s about respect, equity, and creating space where all of us, autistic or not, can succeed together.
