Building Independence on the Road: How Transportation Access Opens Doors for iCan Dream Students
One of the most underestimated barriers facing young adults with disabilities isn’t ability, motivation, or talent—it’s transportation.
At iCan Dream Center, we see this reality every day. Our students are capable, eager, and ready to work, learn, and participate in their communities. Yet without reliable transportation, even the most motivated young adult can find their world shrinking instead of expanding. That’s why transportation access isn’t an afterthought for us—it’s a core part of how we teach independence.
Through our partnership with Pace, students are able to take cost-controlled Uber rides to jobs, internships, appointments, and community activities. This program removes a critical barrier while honoring students’ dignity and autonomy, offering a transportation option that reflects how adults move through the world.
For many of our students, transportation has historically meant dependence. Fixed-route systems can feel overwhelming or impractical, and relying on family members often limits opportunities and independence. The Pace program shifts that dynamic. It gives students a way to move through their days with greater flexibility, responsibility, and confidence.
One of those students is Aaron, an iCDC graduate who works at Jewel. Aaron uses the Pace program to get to work, to attend appointments, and to take care of everyday errands—things many of us take for granted, but which represent meaningful independence for him. Having reliable transportation means Aaron can keep a consistent work schedule, manage his commitments, and participate more fully in daily life.
What Aaron appreciates most is the freedom. The ability to get where he needs to go, when he needs to be there, has expanded his sense of control over his own life. He also enjoys the social connection that comes with the experience—chatting with his Uber drivers, practicing conversation, and engaging with people in the community in small but meaningful ways.
At iCan Dream Center, we believe independence is built through thoughtful, real-life supports. Programs like Pace’s cost-controlled rides help bridge the gap between learning skills and living them—one ride at a time.
